I too would like to have the hygiene recalls be switched to the dentist on occasion. It does require several steps to manually change when you switch to the dentist for a routine recall but with a click of the mouse you can easily change between hygienist no additional steps required..

On behalf of the front desk, I understand how the staff feel when there ends up with holes in the schedule after working hard to fill the schedule. I came up with a solution for broken appointments. I mark the appointment as a broken appointment. I either send it to unscheduled list or delete it (depends on the patient) If a NP I just mark it broken appt and leave it on the schedule.
