I am getting ready to build a new server.
What version of mysql should I use .... should I wait for 5.5 to stabilize?

If you are on stable version (7.6.x) you should use mysql 5.0.22, otherwise use 5.5.x ( I thinki it is 5.5.9) if you are using Open Dental 7.8.x.

nsparks are saying yes od now works with 5.5mysql and if so is it yes it works with linux 5.5 mysql or no stay on 5.0

Linux 5.5 should be just fine if that's what you prefer.
