We have been transitional our patients to pay with Zelle, as it is less labor intensive and also avoids the credit card processing fees.
Is there a simple way to add a processing fee to credit card payments without having to manually calculate it each time.

Re: credit card processing fee
CONTACT YOUR CREDIT CARD PROCESSOR, THEY WILL DO IT FOR YOU
I asked Google Gemini and I got this answer.
(I use ChatGPT , Gemini, Grock. .....a lot now)
Work with your Payment Processor/POS Provider: This is the absolute easiest path.
Many modern payment processors (like Stripe, Square, Clover, etc.) and POS systems (like Lightspeed, eHopper, etc.) offer settings to automatically apply a surcharge or convenience fee.
- You'd typically go into your account settings, enable the feature, set the percentage or flat fee, and the system handles adding it to the transaction and displaying it on the receipt.
- Some even provide pre-programmed terminals or assist with reprogramming.
PATIENT Disclosure about these additional fees is IMPORTANT
Offer Alternatives:
Always provide an alternative payment method that does not incur the fee (e.g., cash, debit card, ZELLE, ...)
Create a procedure code: Z1234 and post the credit card fees in Open Dental

I don't know if Open Dental's built-in payment processors have this option. There are several other processors that do, though.
I believe Moolah (https://www.moolah.cc) has a surcharging option, where their system will automatically calculate the surcharge for you. Their Crown platform integrates well with Open Dental and is easy to use for staff.

Axle ( https://meetaxle.com/ ) offers exactly what your practice needs and more. Practices across the nation are leveraging Axle to pass credit card surcharges onto patients, while the practice covers debit card fees. The entire payment process is fully automated, ensuring that payments are seamlessly posted to the provider who performed the procedure and linked directly to the procedure code. Additionally, Axle is the only provider in the country that we are aware of utilizing Open Dental’s Tier 4 API, which has been a game-changer for dental groups of all sizes.
