Version 11.1 crashing on startup

Post by Jorgebon » Tue Oct 04, 2011 3:26 pm

I downloaded version 11.1 at home and had problems on startup. Most of the time it would stop and a message would say "Open dental has stopped working, searching for solution to problem". After some investigating I found that the problem happens only when running in the Aereo theme (Windows Vista). I haven't tried it on other operating systems. Maybe some memory problem? Jordan have you noticed this? Has anybody run into this problem? This does not happen in version 11.0.

If anybody has this problem, right click on the Open Dental icon. Then go to properties and in the compatibility tab select "Disable visual themes". Open Dental will then startup without problems.

More info: The problem happens inmediately after the splash screen appears. I have all the dotnets up to date and I have the arial font. I tried solving by disabling the aereo theme and going back to the Vista Basic theme, but that did not help. It can be solved by going to the properties in the program icon menu and either selecting in the compatibility tab "Disable Visual Themes" or "Disable Desktop composition".

This is the information that shows up in the computer management event log when Open Dental crashes. I tried to find information on the internet, but after trying a lot of the recommended solutions, the only thing left to do is reinstall Vista. So I decided to not do that and will continue to use the workaround I came up with as explained on the previous posts for as long as this will continue to work.

Faulting application OpenDental.exe, version 11.1.4.0, time stamp 0x4e9498f2, faulting module clr.dll, version 4.0.30319.239, time stamp 0x4e181a6d, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x000dac3b, process id 0x%9, application start time 0x%10.

I'm getting another error message:

Application: OpenDental.exe
Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to an internal error in the .NET Runtime at IP 6F63F750 (6F160000) with exit code 80131506.

Eureka!
I found what the problem was. I went into safe mode without network and Open Dental ran fine. No errors at all. Then I tried Safe mode with networking and the errors came back. So I hit CTRL ALT DEL and made a list from the task manager of all the services and processes that ran while in Safe Mode with networking and not in plain Safe Mode. One of the services was SCardSvc, used for a smart card reader that my laptop has. I disabled the service and no more errors! Hope this helps anyone who might run into the same problem.
