Hi all,
I'm having trouble managing file size for documents I scan into open dental. I played around with the Imaging setup to try to improve, but it doesn't seem to be helping. It appears that one page PDF files are around 300-400kb which seems too large.
Any advice on set up that will compress files when scanning through the open dental image module? could my scanner be the issue? I have a new Dell C1765nf printer/scanner.
Thanks in advance.

Re: image setup
Remember, document file size has an almost direct correlation to your ability to read/print said document. 300-400kb files aren't large considering that they are pdf scanned images rather than pdf "editable" text docs.
For comparison purposes, CBCT scans are 550MB/scan. I back those things up too. Hard drives are cheap. Get yourself a USB 3.0 external backup hard drive and don't sweat it.

Hi thanks for the feedback! What was tripping me up was my scanner at home seems to have some pdf compressor that makes the files maybe 1/2 the size. Sounds good though - we don't do much scanning anyway so should be fine. Just my OCD acting up againteethdood wrote:Remember, document file size has an almost direct correlation to your ability to read/print said document. 300-400kb files aren't large considering that they are pdf scanned images rather than pdf "editable" text docs.

I scan with Paperport, rather than the built in OD scan tool. Scanning at 200dpi, B&W, my file sizes average 10-30 KB per page. Then I import them into OD Images.
I disagree with those who say the file size doesn't matter. I have over 6,000 files in my OpenDentImages folder totaling 890MB, accumulated over 4 years, growing at a rapid rate. I wouldn't want it to take up 10 or 20 times more space. Even though space is cheap, there has to be some cost in speed and time.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm assuming this is software you just purchase and install? And that it should work with any scanner right? I'll check it outHersheydmd wrote:I scan with Paperport, rather than the built in OD scan tool. Scanning at 200dpi, B&W, my file sizes average 10-30 KB per page. Then I import them into OD Images.

Yes, and a Lite (SE) version is included with many scanners. But it works just as well without some of the bells and whistles. It's a superb document management program.
