Copy/Paste feature

Post by openwide » Wed Feb 08, 2012 1:58 pm

Open Dental makes it very easy to COPY and then PASTE within the image module. We use this feature to copy there license pic into there patient pic so it shows on the scheduler. We also use it when there are multiple patients on one EOB. Scan EOB into one patient, copy and then paste into the other patient.

But........

File are huge. I have my scanner settings so that scanned files are legible but small files. When I copy and paste within OpenDental, the pasted file size is much larger. Also if you crop an image the file size stays the same.

Shouldn't the copied file sizes be the same and then smaller if cropped?

Is there a setting that I am missing?

That seems like a bug we might have fixed a few versions ago. What version are you using?

I have put down the copy/paste bloat as a bug. As for the cropping, no, the file size will remain the same. You see, we don't actually alter the existing image for fear of losing detail. We instead store the crop rectangle x,y,width, height in the database and only show you that part of the existing image on the disk. This allows us much more power going forward. For example, we might decide to let you undo a crop some day. We also do the same thing for rotations, flips, and contrast adjustments. In all those cases, the original image is not touched. If you go open the raw image on the disk, you can see that.

I've added the following explanation to our manual:
If you copy/paste an existing image that's already in Open Dental, the file size may get bloated, especially if it starts out as a gif. All such images get converted to jpg with zero compression, resulting in some bloat. The current recommendation for duplicating a gif is to do so directly in Windows, in the AtoZ folder. Then, return to the Open Dental Images module, and refresh. The new file will be picked up and attached to the patient.

i never use .gif
Only jpegs

example: a drivers license is scanned into open dental as a jpeg has a file size of 63kb

copy & paste within OD and it jumps up to 430kb - bloating times 7

thats more than "some bloat"

doesn't seem like a big issue but over years its gonna load up our servers unnecessarily

We weren't getting that much bloat when testing, just due to different samples. Anyway, it's feature request #2273.
