If we want to send a friend request to patients, can this be done via od, like sending an email?
Or am i best to just login to fb, then send from there?

Not sure if you just have the terminology turned around but assuming that you're talking about a profile for your office on FB, don't create it as an individual who would "friend" patients - best practice is to set up as a business page where patients can "Like" it.
Also, not best practice to direct message patients before they "Like" your page and even then I would do so carefully.
There is no FB integration in Open Dental. Once you have a proper Facebook page set up, email your patients a newsletter with a link encouraging them to like your office on FB.
