Apteryx

Post by jordansparks » Thu May 06, 2021 10:10 am

I just tried to go to the Apteryx website. For those who don't know, that was a well-known independent imaging software that had been around for a long time. I knew they had been bought by PlanetDDS/Denticon for something like $22M last year, but I didn't realize that Denticon planned to close off Apteryx. It doesn't look very independent or interoperable to me anymore. The Denticon website looks really slick without actually providing any information that I need. For example, I can't find a monthly fee for any of their services, nor can I find any screenshots. I have a bad feeling. I know they are already trying to push our Apteryx users to switch from Open Dental to Denticon. Pushy sales people really tick me off. I also heard a rumor that they might discontinue their desktop product in favor of their SAAS web product. I suspect this is because they get no recurring revenue when they sell the desktop product.

Thanks for posting this! I'd been considering moving from my ancient [but latest version] of Patterson Imaging (which runs an ancient version of Sybase) to Apteryx. Now I can cross that option off the list.

They are going SAAS exclusively. Really long thread on it here...

They are officially sunsetting their on-premises software:
https://www.planetdds.com/newsroom/suns ... version-4/
This means that the "perpetual" license you thought you bought actually has an end date. There are a LOT of users affected by this decision.

I recently switched from Eaglesoft to Open Dental. I didn't want to have to pay for Eaglesoft and use bridge software so we moved all of our Xrays manually out of Eaglesoft onto our server and then from our server into OD. It's a pain but it was worth it.

I hope they let us know with plenty of time...

But, won't the software work, as it, if no updates are needed?

The Apteryx software would still work sans updates. However, they are also shutting down their activation/licensing server. So if any computer in your office ever needs reactivation, it won't be possible. So then your computers would just drop off one by one.

So, I'm still using Version 3 of Apteryx...I know, I know. And I'd like to replace a couple of my ancient computers.
So what do people suggest I do?

Apteryx would suggest you start ponying up $1800+ a year for their cloud software...

I, then, have two options:

1. find a software that reads XDR sensors and ScanX plates.

2. replace my computer hardware of any old workstation by??? Is it Dec 31, 2021 or June 1, 2023???

What date would be the last time I can transfer my license to a different bit of hardware?

1. Open Dental reads XDR sensors and ScanX plates, so that's an easy option, eventually.

Yes, we can do an Apteryx image conversion. It's not posted on this page for some reason:
https://www.opendental.com/site/conversionimages.html
maybe because it's fairly new. I think it's a fairly decent conversion, but not 100%.

I'm on Open Dental 17.4, how do I go about acquiring xrays with my tuxedo sensors to bypass apteryx?

Start by updating Open Dental to 21.2.

I called apteryx today and it looks like they want $2400/yr + $200 installations to use their cloud based software.
Has anyone who uses apteryx find a cheaper solution?
I have tested imaging on opendental but unfortunately there are some feature that's not available such as:
1. being able to go back to redo previous capture automatically (we have to quit the on-going capture and delete image first)
2. being able to see thumbnail of all xrays and intra-oral image in one window

btw, it seems opendental has build-in native sw for XDR. Does native here means fully imaging capability?

1. Until we get that, you could do retakes in a second run, after you were all done with the rest of the capture.
2. Thumbnails just got done. They will be in version 21.4.
We tried very hard to implement the native XDR, but it dragged on for months with diminishing returns. So we will come back to that after most of the other requested imaging features are done.

I have a call in to look at upgrading so I can capture tuxedo sensors directly into open dental. They are going to call me back. Will they also be able to tell me how much it would be to do the conversion of my current xrays?

I would focus on the update to the newer version first. Once you get that settled and running smoothly, you would talk to the conversions department. Yes, you could technically do all of that this morning. But you'd be on the phone for a while, and it would probably involve a remote connection to look at your imaging software. A conversion is a process that takes weeks. But maybe they could quickly give you a price.

Opendental is working great for me and I love the software, but the upgrade doesn't do anything for me if I can't capture xrays. I want to be sure it will do what I want before I dive into the upgrade.

EDIT - I did get a call back, but the person I spoke with was not familiar with being able to capture xrays or convert existing ones. She said she would do some checking and get back to me. I was not able to take her return call, but she left a message with my front desk saying you could not convert xrays. So, I'm on hold now waiting to confirm that and see about capturing xrays.

I don't see Tuxedo on the list of sensors that users have reported as working successfully. But so far nobody has run across a sensor that won't work. What imaging software are you converting from?

I use apteryx and the reason I went with tuxedo sensors is because it's the same company.

Supposedly there is a twain driver, but I don't have any drivers labeled as TWAIN in the flash drive that came with the sensors.

For twain you may need to call tuxedo to get it.
I am using quickray and they actually install both twain and driver for the sensor.
There are also calibration file (unique to sensor) that need to be placed in program data.

@ Jordan: does the conversion process placed the converted images into A-Z folder?

Yes, we convert from Apteryx, and the files end up in the normal A-Z folder in Open Dental.

Hi! How were you able to contact quickray? We purchased the sensor years ago and I cannot find a website or contact ANYWHERE for quickray as we purchased it from videodental. We are switching from using apteryx xrayvision to the opendental imaging instead. The problem is when I hit acquire using my quickray sensor, an apteryx popup appears and I’d like it to go straight into opendental like our other sensor does.

You need to be on Open Dental customer support for the 'Acquire' button to work and be able to take Xrays.
Open Dental will enable that feature for you when you are on support.
