OpenDental on Ubuntu 7.1
I have an Ubuntu workstation configured and have mono running OK using Justin Shaefer's suggestions. I get Opendental going up to the database chooser screen. At that point I get the "cannot connect to the specified database server" message. Does the format for the database server need to be different for Linux? I am running the MySql database on an Ubuntu server and the windows machines all connect fine to it.
Since I have MySql running on this workstation as well I put a copy of our database in /var/lib/mysql and tried to connect to localhost. It connects but I get the error " preference table in read only". The preference table shows to be 777 like all the others with ls -al. Any Ideas?
Running the workstations on Linux is appealing. I got back from a fishing trip a couple of weeks ago and an automatic update from Mr. Bill broke 14 of 18 workstations around here.
thanks

Re: OpenDental on Ubuntu 7.1
On the workstations, your mysql user security settings are wrong. The mysql user you are using does not have full permission. See http://www.open-dent.com/manual/passwordsmysql.html
As for the first part of your question, try using the ip address instead.

The IP address worked fine on the connection to the database. The images folder did not seem to work. I had to assign the images folder on the local Linux workstation but it changed it for the other (Window) workstations. What is the format for specifying the images file on the Linux server? Samba is running and the directory is exported. Since both workstation and server are running Linux, should I export and mount an NFS share? Thanks

You can override the images folder on an individual computer basis. You know that, right? Don't use the top box. Use the next box down, where it says "path for this computer".

I saw that. It does seem best to connect to the production A-Z on the actual server though.

But that path might look different on your Linux box. For example, it might start with an IP address.

Re: OpenDental on Ubuntu 7.1
I noticed a choice to put the images in the database. I have liked the idea of having everything in one place. Backup size does not seem to be critical to me. Are there any other negatives to this? It would solve the connection of the Linux workstations to images a lot easier.

I would not recommend, Jordan has said before this is not the best idea(but you better let him explain why)

Re: OpenDental on Ubuntu 7.1
Someone else added that, but they didn't tie up all the loose ends. And then, as we have added more features, we have created more loose ends. The biggest problem I see is that MySQL limits table row length to 64000 bytes. 64 k is a pretty small image. I don't see any way around that limitation. Just stay away from it. As far as I'm concerned, it's not a feature of Open Dental. I'm getting very close to removing that checkbox from the Data Path window.

I got it working OK by mounting the server A-Z directory on the workstation with nfs.

See the message I sent you. I basically sent you a bunch of links to various pages on our website. I'm locking this topic since it should be a new topic instead of resurecting this old one.
