Receipts look differently with OpenEdge

Post by ForrestGumpDDS »

Good afternoon.

We use OpenEdge integration for payment processing, and one persistent issue is the appearance of the receipts.

Currently, the receipts appear to use no formatting, no different font sizes, bold text, or proper tabulation. Because of this, the most relevant information isn’t easy to identify at a glance; it requires reading the receipt line by line.

I contacted Open Dental about this about 1–1.5 years ago, and the response was essentially: “We simply print whatever data we receive from the card processor. If you want different formatting, it needs to be changed on the OpenEdge side.

OpenEdge provided a few settings, but they only allow adding a header or footer, not formatting existing fields. However, they also pointed me to receipts on their web portal, where the same receipt appears formatted differently. While it still doesn’t use bold text or different font sizes, it uses tabulation, creating the appearance of two aligned columns, which makes it much easier to read.

Another issue my front desk has raised is that receipts print very light. Printer driver adjustments change the test page appearance, but they do not affect the receipts, which suggests the printer is following instructions sent by the computer rather than its own driver settings.

As a workaround, I adjust “dithering” option in the Windows printer preferences and increased the dot thickness by 1, which makes the receipts print darker.

For reference, I’m attaching several examples:

1 & 2: Receipts printed from Open Dental (one darker with the extra dot thickness)

3: The same receipt printed from the OpenEdge portal

4: An older receipt printed from an Elavon terminal, which represents the ideal format—different font sizes and clearer emphasis on key information such as the amount, date, and company name

At minimum, it would be great if Open Dental receipts (1) could be formatted like the OpenEdge portal receipts (3).

Ideally, I’d also like to know if there is any way to modify the receipt template, for example to make the $ amount larger or more prominent. I suspect this template must be on the Openedge side...

Thank you in advance for your time.

Vlad.
