new server

Post by roybloom » Mon May 25, 2009 12:18 pm

Gosh this is a real pain in the butt. I just can not get OD data from one hard drive to another. I have tried everything. There must be a step I am missing. It would seem this would be fairly simple.

stop mysql( program runs fine as a trial) rename demo ...copy and paste from one hard drive to another ...folders....opendental...well there are several...I went and lined up c and d drive copied opendental data and open dental from d to c....restarted mysql ...still have it asking for a registration key...which will not come up using a USB connection to the old drive....ugh

It just takes practice. You should have left your old computer running until you successfully got you new one running. Now, it sounds like you have neither. If your old one was running, you could just look up the registration key inside OD. In any case, I will send you a private message containing your registration number.

Thanks, I did that......says invalid registration ....could be that the back up is an image and avoid all this stuff. I have a flash drive with a backup, and the old drive still lets me use OD on the new computer.

Did you enter registration key with "-" in it. I remember it requires the dashes in it.

No. It can be entered with or without dashes.

Greetings

I successfully migrated from Machine A{Server in office, running mysql, and containing all the images}, Machine B{Reception} to Machine C {Server in office, running mysql, and containing all the images}, Machine B {Reception}, Machine A{new location, no longer running mysql and not containing any images}. In addition I regularly backup from my office server and restore on another unconnected machine for backup, which also functions as a server in its location, but only for testing purposes.

Let's say you have OpenDental on Machine A, with mysql installed and running (everything is in [Machine A]C:\mysql), and the images, pdfs are in [Machine A] C:\OpenDentalImages, with some files in C:\OpenDentalExports and C:\OpenDentalLetters , and you want to copy to Machine B {for example a home machine or a new office machine}. I assume a single machine setup (not like my 'server' 'workstations' setup). Once you have this mastered the

Generally if you are running stable identical Open Dental versions on Machines A & B, you should only need to follow steps 1, 2, 3, 4 below, not -4, -3, -2, -1, 0

Basic Procedure.
-4. Delete [Machine B] C:\mysql Just because I have no idea what you have been doing with machine B, which is apparently not working
-3. Install OpenDental trial on Machine B - everything. New database, etc.
-2. If the OpenDental version on Machine A is older than the trial on Machine B, update OpenDental on Machine A to a fully functional valid version newer than the trial. Eg you are running 6.0 on Machine A, but the current trial is 6.5.22. Update machine A to 6.5.24 when you register. Do not use the trial on Machine A. Or, simply install an old trial to Machine B, e.g version 5.7 trial so that Machine A is running a newer version than the trial on Machine B.
-1. Copy/backup the OpenDental program from [Machine A] C:\Program Files\Open Dental and restore to [Machine B] C:\Program Files\Open Dental so that both machines are running identical fully functional valid versions
-0. Ensure that OpenDental functions properly on Machine A {your working database} & B {trial database}
1. Copy/backup from [Machine A] C:\mysql), C:\OpenDentalImages, C:\OpenDentalExports and C:\OpenDentalLetters
2. Stop mysql on Machine B
3. Copy/restore to [Machine B] C:\mysql), C:\OpenDentalImages, C:\OpenDentalExports and C:\OpenDentalLetters
4. Restart mysql on Machine B

I have experienced no problems safely backing up the OpenDental database without stopping mysql on the source machine {though it would not hurt to stop mysql if you want to}; however I have always needed to stop mysql on the target machine (either another machine or the same machine - if you are restoring an old backup) before restoring the database. [I believe I also saw the same advice somewhere on open-dent.com Jordan please confirm]

As far as I understand, all the registration data would be stored in the database somewhere in c:\mysql. Since you are backing up and restoring the entire database, to a new location, there should be no problem. [And the registration request should not appear]

I have never used the OpenDental Backup/Restore features but they may be easier.

Hope this helps.

Right, stopping the mysql service to make a backup is optional, but stopping it before restoring a backup is required.
